As an emergency veterinarian, it saddens me how frequently I have to use this phrase – almost on a daily basis. Euthanasia is still such a controversial subject in today’s world, and with good reason. But I whole heartedly believe that peacefully ending ones suffering can be such a gift- at times the only relief you can offer a pet
This past year working as an ER vet and performing countless euthanasia’s, I’ve formed some opinions on the process. There are times where clients straight up decline euthanasia, whether due to personal or religious beliefs, wanting their pet to leave this world “naturally.” It’s not my job to convince anyone that euthanasia is a good thing, as your veterinarian I will support your decision and try to keep your pet comfortable regardless of what you choose
However, I have over this past year formed one strong opinion pertaining to euthanasia and I wanted to see what my fellow colleagues thought. It greatly saddens me when people choose to drop off their pets for euthanasia and not be present until the end. Don’t get me wrong, having been on both sides of the table, I definitely get how difficult the process can be. No one wants to say goodbye to their loved ones. Especially when this pet has given you 15 years of happy memories, and stories to laugh about for way longer. The pain is unbearable, but something I’ve witnessed after seeing a pet being dropped off is this
.
They look for you. They really do. They’re sick, the hospital smells weird, I can try but my words of comfort and embrace do not compare at all to yours. Your smell is lingering but they can’t feel you there. Their eyes wander the corners of the room for you, and I can’t help but wonder if the owners knew how much more peace they can give their pets by just being present, if that would change their minds
